Christ Burstein was last on Koh Phangan about a year ago, he is now back and will play for us at Phanganist Hostel on April 5th where at Midnight we'll help him celebrate his birthday!
With his unique label 'Rural' which lives up to name, we catch up with him between island gigs...
Hi Christ, welcome back to Koh Phangan!
Yes! It’s my mandatory stop between ending the indian tour and the European summer.
Where have you been since you were last here?
It was a long year. Touring 70% of the time, based in Berlin but playing around Europe for the Summer in Germany, Spain, France, Sweden, etc.
A couple of months in Argentina, playing mostly in the countryside, what I loved! From December till now I’ve been based in India and playing all around.
How's Rural been doing?
It was an amazing Rural year, we got featured on Beatport, Traxxsourse, What people play, among others.
We are doing top 20 general charts on different releases and support (and being played) by artists like Hernan Cattaneo, Richie Hawtin, Luciano, Marco Carola, Dubfire, Popof, Joris voorn, etc.
This year will have releases of a vinyl series with Patrick Chardronnet, (one of my all time favourites) Someone else, Innelea, Bedderman and Dalhman, Distale, Chris Fortier, among others.
You will play Phanganist Hostel on Wednesday 5th of April, what will you do for us?
That´s a surprise!!! Probably will try some new gems that I got back from the mastering studio this week! Besides celebrate my birthday at Midnight!
What are your plans whilst on Koh Phangan?
I will spend some time in the studio working on the next releases, organising the Rural showcases for the European summer, doing a free dive course! And off course, playing a bit. These are some of the shows that I have already, still open for new dates!

You're promo photos are always ace, what's the concept with these?
Good question! Last year, with my favorite photographer, a great Russian talent Ifusha Kalina we tried to express a couple of concepts.
With the suit and the cows this illustrates the entire Rural Concept, how organic and modern civilization merge on one point), the cows as the followers, me in the suit as the boss and the atmosphere as the general environment.
This year, I found that in the world more and more people are talking about the music that they play, with the music one has to express the artist's quality on this social media evolution, it’s more important for a good instagram picture than a track that took 30 hours in the studio. So we wanted to show me as natural as possible.
‘What you see is what you get’ no less, no more, and nothing shows that more, than… naked pics (artistic and not showing more than needed!) But this is what I am, this is what I do. Take it or leave it.
And when you get rid of your ego you can express (and accept) yourself in a proper way. Everyday almost everybody wants to show us different masks and we waste so much time trying to be somebody that we are not.
And why should people come see you play at Phanganist?
For what I said before, what you see is what you get. Mostly I will play my own tracks and Rural Records tracks that will be released during this year.
I prefer people to LOVE what I do or to HATE what I do, but at least it’s not going to be the same as everybody else.
