Dj Rob is here enjoying his second visit to Koh Phangan after originally coming ten years ago. He will play from 9 - 10pm for Phanganist Hostel’s Drum and Bass night tonight Friday 10th of March so here’s what to expect...
Hi Rob, so what got you interested in Drum and Bass?
It is the most expressive electronic music style with deep content, you might find the happiest, relaxing and also the darkest, deepest patterns in it.

When did you begin to mix?
My Dad is a famous musician, I was going to music school also so I’ve tried several instruments but I realised that turntables are my real ones.
I started to play in 1992, mainly Funk, Hip Hop in the beginning, then the Detroit Techno line amazed me and I started to play Techno in several clubs and festivals.
In 1996 one of my favorite Djs ‘Cadik’, gave me Photek’s Ni Ten Ichi Ryu vinyl…that defined my future.
Try to explain your unique style...
Drum and bass is not black and white, it’s changing continuously and since I’ve been playing DnB for 20 years right now my style is changing also.
Nowadays I really like Liquid, Half Step, Jungle trends. But I still like to play old school such as Seba, Calibre, Om Unit.

What have been some memorable gigs?
The first Ed Rush party in Hungary in 1998, and the newest and most prestigious Bass music festival, Bass Camp.
What will you bring this Friday 10th?
I’ll have DnB music from Hungarian producers, I’d like to play lighter ones but it always depends on the audience. The Neurofunk ones probably will stay in the bag.
Why do you think it's good to have Drum and Bass on Koh Phangan?
As more people discover Phangan the music uniqueness is getting general, so it’s a special treasure to have places that serves other styles as well as DnB.

What do you do in your free time on the island?
Food, market, food, sea, food, ride a bike, food, surf, food…
Leave us with your music philosophy....
Nothing is black and white.
